駒澤大学墨蹟展「黄檗の伝来と江戸の禅宗」
Recently, there was an special exhibition of Obaku paintings at Komazawa University from Oct. 10-Nov. 19, 2016. I am glad Dokuan Genkō  獨庵玄光 （1630-1698） was included and his portrait appeared in the banner. He was Daozhe Chaoyuan's 道者超元 student but did not study with Yinyuan because Daozhe was forced to go back to China due to his different dharma transmission. I have a whole section on Genko and his thought in my book Leaving for the Rising Sun, pp. 191-197.

Timothy H. Barret's Review of Spreading Buddha's Word in East Asia

I am very glad to read Dr. Timothy Barret's review of my book about the Chinese Buddhist canon. He said, "The editors have thus shown great discrimination in producing a collection that serves to inform without entirely overwhelming the newcomer." Indeed, we have thought about a lot to make this book accessible but comprehensive and analytical as the first book about the Chinese canon in any Western language. We did keep the Daoist canon in mind but we just forgot to mention it in the book as Tim points out. Sorry about that. But in the volume on regional religious systems in China which I am editing, we are going to have a lot on Daoism and popular religion.

Guanyue Temple 关岳庙 in Beijing

In Nov. 2016, when I stayed at Guanghua Temple 广化寺, I came across Guanyue Temple 关岳庙 nearby. It used to be the designated residence of the Dalai Lama 达赖喇嘛 when he visited Beijing in 1950s and not open to the public. But the buildings are magnificent. It was a family temple of the Qing royal princes.

Lecture on Master Yinyuan in Guanghua Temple 广化寺 Beijing

It was my great pleasure to stay at Guanghua Temple 广化寺 in Beijing and gave a lecture on Master Yinyuan in Nov. 13, 2016. Guanghua Temple is the headquarter of Beijing Buddhist Association and an important site in the Ming and Qing Dynasty. The topic of my talk is "Chan Master Yinyuan Longqi and the Formation of Early Modern East Asian Buddhism" 隐元隆琦禅师与前近代东亚佛教圈的形成. Thank you Ven. Shengkai 圣凯, Dingming 定明 and all the other teachers. (Please note that in the link page there is a precious photo of President Xi Jinping 习近平, then Fujian governor, and Master Jiewen 戒文, who was the previous abbot of Huangbo Temple in Fuqing.
